On March 14, 2017, Moscow’s Sretensky Monastery hosted a meeting of the new commission on Church Law appointed by the Inter-Council Presence of the Russian Orthodox Church, chaired by His Eminence Archbishop Mark of Berlin and Germany of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. In accordance with its mandate issued on January 30, 2017, the gathering addressed Church law, as well as overcoming and preventing schisms. Protopriest Alexander Zadornov served as Secretary. Discussed at the meeting was a list of priorities for 2017, including organizing working groups, seminars and round tables. The participants continued to edit a draft document titled “Actual Questions on Applying Rules on Violations of Law and Punishment (Suspensions),” and covered other topics, including “Lifting Clerical Suspension,” “Canonical Classification of Schisms” and “Codification of Sources for Church Law.” Also participating in the meeting was Deacon Andre Psarev, teacher at Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville, NY.
