On Great Monday, April 10, 2017, His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, after celebrating the Liturgy of Pre-Sanctified Gifts at the Synodal Cathedral of Our Lady “of the Sign,” officiated at the funeral and burial of Archdeacon Eugene Burbelo. He was joined by His Eminence Archbishop Peter of Chicago and Mid-America, His Grace Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan, 6 priests and 11 deacons, as the Cathedral choir sang under the direction of Peter Fekula. Friends and relatives of the late clergymen prayed along with the cathedral’s congregants and worshipers from other churches. In his eulogy, Metropolitan Hilarion noted the loyalty and devoted love and piety with which the late clergymen performed his many years of service, which began under Metropolitan Anastassy (Gribanovsky) in 1955. Vladyka Hilarion pointed out the self-discipline and fine example Fr Eugene had served not only in church but in daily life, emulating his spiritual father, Archimandrite Gelassy (Mayboroda). Protodeacon Joseph Jarostchuk then spoke on behalf of the diaconate, remembering the kindness, generosity and profound faith of Fr Eugene. Fr Eugene was buried at Novo-Diveevo Convent in Nanuet, NY, after which a memorial luncheon was offered at nearby Otrada Russian center, which also displayed a small exhibit on the life and service of Archdeacon Eugene. The Editors of the Synod website wishes eternal memory to the pious servant of the Church of Christ!
